Strava in Tableau
Always wanted to play with your Strava data in Tableau? You can now link Strava data to Tableau so you can analyze it. Strava is the social network for athletes where millions of Dutch people share their sports data with each other. In this blog I explain how you can manage to get your personal data into Tableau so you can visualize and analyze it yourself.
Web Data Connectors
Tableau makes it possible to scrape data from Web sites. These Web data connectors are created by enthusiastic Tableau users and for the Strava website, it has now been created. To import data from Strava, there are a number of steps required.
Step 1
Go to the Strava website and log in to your account. Navigate to your settings page and click on My API Applications. On this page, you need two values: Client ID and Client Secret. You also need to create the web data connector. You can do this by clicking edit in the upper right corner and under Authorization of callback domain enter the following: takashibinns.github.io

Step 2
Then you can open Tableau desktop and start connecting. After opening, you can click on connect to data in a new workbook and choose Web data connector. This can be found under more at To a Server. In the pop-up window you can paste the following website at the top:
https://takashibinns.github.io/tableau-wdc-strava/index.html
Then the screen asks for your Client ID and your Client Secret found in Step 1 in the settings on Strava's website. After filling in, click Authorize Tableau and again click Authorize in the next screen.

Step 3
Now your Strava data is loaded into Tableau and you can get started. Strava provides 4 tables that you can use in Tableau:
- My Activities: This table aggregates all your activities ever from Strava.
- My Activity Streams: this table contains detailed data per activity (has 1 API call per activity so may cause you to exceed the API Limit if you have many activities)
- My Profile: Contains your profile data stored in Strava
- My Gear: Contains the data from your saved shoes/bikes in Strava
